These pieces are made by assembling countless strands or “stringers” of colored glass into patterns that give the appearance of woven forms. Instead of taking this preliminary piece to a full fusing temperature which would leave it totally smooth to the touch, I go well enough below that temperature so that the individual strands maintain much of their separate, tactile characteristics. I then slump and manipulate the piece, resulting in a finished format that belies the usual perception of glass as hard and static and instead gives the illusion of a soft and undulating form.
Each pistil is also comprised of stringers and is taken through similar processes of fusing and slumping.
